Manchurian Survival 1985

Description

1985, a watershed decision. Argentina had been humbled by Britain after its attempted invasion of the Falklands. It was lucky enough not to have its atomic arsenal disarmed.

Other Latin American nations, are not so lucky. Colombia's FARC now is swallowing the country whole, and the Nicaraguans, in defiance of an arms embargo by the United States, received Manchurian Mig-21s and Mig-23s and used it against Costa Rica. Costa Rica was forced to rearm, but at this point, it is getting late.

Peru's Shining Path was on the outskirts of Lima, thanks to a few army defections. The other Latin American countries are apprehensive, as the Senderistas want to unite the continent under their exclusive rule, alone. And they won't stop. Their rule makes the later Taliban and ISIS, or the former Democratic Kampuchea, tame.

In Southeast Asia, the North Japanese leader Sanzo Nosaka, died. But before that, he ordered an invasion of South Africa, in response to an attack by the South Africa Defense Force in a North Japanese and Manchurian training base in Namibia. The Manchurians were dragged to the situation. Li Zhaolin reluctantly agreed. He knew that his resources are strained. The Soviets and their Asian allies are still tied up in Afghanistan. And even if Manchuria can crush the Mudjaheedin there, the cost is too great. So he chose South Africa instead.

And faced with annihilation, the South African leader, PW Botha, is now considering the use of atomic weapons. The North Japanese and Manchurian assault are closing into Pretoria. The Cubans and Angolans are now in Namibia itself. Botha chose to destroy them with atomic weapons.

On December 8, 1985, the Manchurian column approaching Pretoria was hit by a 20-kiloton bomb by the South African Air Force. Angered, the Li Zhaolin ordered a retaliatory strike, one that the South Africans did not expect. The Manchus nuked a suspected nuclear base by South Africa. They threaten the destruction of the De Beers diamond mines and the SASOL factories, creating oil from coal, unless the South Africans surrender. The answer would be in the next installment.

That, and that the Communists ignored the distinction between an unrecognized state and a state with a seat in the United Nations (we are talking about Swaziland), is enough for the Western Powers to intervene.

Interesting to see how the augmented reds react to historical events - though I wonder if the South American rebellions aren't a little too similar to OTL's. South Africa is going to be a pretty big morsel for the communists to digest; assuming the USA doesn't start WW3 over it. I must admit I don't know enough about South African relations with Britain and the US during the Cold War to know whether it would be considered equivalent to invading a NATO partner or more like the invasion of Afghanistan. By this point, the Pope has condemned apartheid, but I wonder how that would actually stack up against 'Holy crap, the Soviets have invaded a country that speaks English'.
