Adapted from one of :iconlamnay:'s maps.

In this scenario, the Russians in the 1850s bully their way to Manchuria and Korea. The Regent Daewongun was forced to give in to the Russians and reluctantly accepted their demands for reform. The Daewongun was not stupid: he is a xenophobe in this TL but faced with defeat, he had to do with pragmatism. And so it came the modernization and westernization of Korea by Russia. Japan did not take it well; fortunately for them, the Meiji restoration happened.

The Qing Dynasty did not also like the idea of Korea being a Russian satellite, despite the successful efforts of its King to make it legitimate and not a Russian protectorate. So, when the Qing dynasty decided to send troops to Korea to make it heel back to the Qing, the Koreans and Japanese are not amused. The Japanese have a good navy; the Koreans had a good army, especially its Russian-trained cavalry. In 1895, the Koreans and Japanese won. Korea gets Manchuria except for the Liaodong peninsula. Japan gets Taiwan and Liaodong. While the Koreans are too busy integrating Manchuria, and thus unable at this moment to pursue further conquests, the Japanese are busy annexing the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, and such. But the Karafuto War, this TTL's Russo-Japanese War, caused the Western World such apprehension. Its alliance with Britain also worried the West. So, the Chinese, now with Yuan Shikai as Emperor after brushing aside the Qing in 1900, is hiring the Germans to modernize his army. The Koreans also looked help to their Russian patrons.

By 1914, this region would be a battleground.

Interesting, I once toyed with a Korea that pulled a meji of its own but never really got any where with it. It had a really silly name too, the Opium Effect XD
